Background of the Study:
Urban crime has a profound effect on the daily lives and economic activities of women traders in Sapele. These women, who often operate in informal markets and public spaces, face heightened risks of theft, harassment, and violence (Amadi, 2023). Urban crime not only undermines their economic stability but also affects their social well-being and empowerment. This study critically examines the nexus between urban crime and its impact on women traders, focusing on the challenges they face in a volatile urban environment (Obi, 2024). The research delves into the socio-cultural and economic factors that increase vulnerability, including inadequate law enforcement and gender biases in security provision (Ifeoma, 2025). By combining quantitative crime statistics with qualitative narratives from affected traders, the study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how urban crime impedes women’s economic participation and personal safety. The investigation further explores community-based initiatives and policy responses aimed at mitigating these adverse effects and promoting a safer business environment for women.
Statement of the Problem:
Women traders in Sapele are significantly affected by urban crime, facing daily challenges that jeopardize their economic activities and personal security. The prevalent criminal activities and lack of effective protective measures contribute to an unsafe trading environment, limiting women’s participation in the urban economy (Amadi, 2023). This study seeks to elucidate these issues and propose practical solutions (Obi, 2024).
